In fact, it was founder, Lisa Curtis’ own battle with severe allergies that prompted her to begin the Bow Wow Gifts
business in the first place.

To Lisa, her dogs are her children, her lifeline and her love. However, she has endured quite a few hardships to
keep them in her life. Years of health problems and several medical missteps led her down a very hard road
only to learn that she is severely allergic to her own dogs – the center of her life and that which she built a
business around.

The story behind her discovery of these allergies is a wake up call to anyone going to the doctor for a regular
check up.

In 2003, Lisa was living in Los Angeles with a very successful career as a supervisor in the casino
entertainment industry. During a regular physical exam, she was told she had enlarged lymph nodes and was
referred to a specialist. Many tests later, she was told she had lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. Her
doctor recommended she have four lymph nodes removed, and believing her health was at stake, she followed
that advice. It turned out her lymph nodes were normal and she did not have lymphoma at all. However, she no
longer had an important part of her immune system.

Sadly, after this surgery and no known diagnosis, Lisa’s health deteriorated.  She developed multiple skin
rashes, swelling and infections. Physicians diagnosed her with everything from stress to scabies to explain her
health condition. Lisa tried every prescribed treatment, including pills, many different topical lotions for her skin
and more than 300 injections of cortisone. She suffered horrific side effects from the medications. At one point,
Lisa even bleached her home and had her dogs dipped to rid the house of any contagions.  She could find no
relief from the rash. In all, Lisa was seen by more than 65 doctors and exhibited as a patient example during
grand rounds. After two years, they told her they simply did not know what was wrong with her.

The treatments began to take a toll on Lisa’s body. She was miserable, unhealthy and needed the help of family.
She sold most of her things, left a great job, the love of her life, packed up her dogs and headed home to live
with her family in Ohio. She felt as though she had literally lost everything. Fortunately, she had the will to try one
last time to get an answer at the Cleveland Clinic.

By some miracle, physicians at the Cleveland Clinic finally got it right. Dr. David Lang and Dr. Dijkstra saved
Lisa's life.  They determined that she had severe allergies as well as serious problems with eczema on her
skin. A simple prescription for Triamcinalone cleared up her eczema. Blood tests revealed she was severely
allergic to dust mites, pollen and unfortunately, her beloved dogs. She was told she could no longer live with
them.

Lisa had just begun Bow Wow Gifts, centered around her dogs. They were an enormous part of her life. How
could she abandon them?  A new drug called Xolair turned out to be her solution. Lisa was accepted into a study
of the drug and it helped her tremendously. She is now able to live with her dogs as long as she takes this and
other allergy medications.

After five years of struggling to regain her health, Lisa feels as though she was given a new leash on life. She
runs Bow Wow Gifts on the principles of good health and giving back to the community. Fivecents of each order
of biscuits sold goes to the HSUS End Dog Fighting Program.  She also shares proceeds with rescue groups
and animal shelters.

Lisa hopes her story will inspire others to be their own advocate when it comes to their health and recognize the
importance of getting a second opinion. Never give up and you will find the answer.
