Fearless acts of bravery. Profound loyalty.
Unconditional love.

Whether it’s going into harms way to protect a loved
one or staying by their side through rough times, dogs
do amazing things. They are extraordinarily unselfish
beings. And sometimes, their acts are nothing less
than heroic.

We created this space to honor those dogs who have
shown their courage and loyalty to others whether that
be humans or fellow animals.  Is your dog a hero?

ONE MAN'S SPECIAL
TRIBUTE TO A DOG

The one absolutely unselfish
friend that
a man can have in this selfish
world,
the one that never deserts him,
the one that never proves
ungrateful
or treacherous, is his dog.
A man's dog stands by him in
prosperity
and in poverty,
in health and in sickness.
He will sleep on the cold ground
where
the wintery winds blow,
and the snow drives fiercely,
if only he may be near his
master's side.
He will kiss the hand that has no
food to offer, he will lick the sores
and wounds that come in
encounter with
the roughness of the world.
He guards
the sleep of his Pauper master
as if he
were a prince.
When all other friends desert,
he remains.
When riches take wings and
reputation
falls to pieces,
he is as constant in
his love as the sun in it's journey
through the heavens.
If misfortune drives the master
forth
an outcast in the world,
friendless and homeless,
the faithful dog asks
no higher privilege than that of
accompanying him to guard
against danger,
to fight against his enemies.
And when the last scene of all
comes,
and death takes the master in it's
embrace, and his body is laid
away in the cold ground,
no matter if all other
friends pursue their way,
there by the
graveside will the noble dog be
found,
his head between his paws,
his eyes sad,
but open in alert watchfulness,
faithful and true, even in death.

-From a speech given by
Former Senator
George Graham Vest
of Missouri. Delivered in 1870
when he was acting as a lawyer
in a suit against
a man who had killed
the dog of his client.
-- He won the case.

Congratulations
to the Hero Dog winners!
Bizzy is 6 years old, he's a red smooth coat full size Dachshund.  He
is a hero in my eyes.  First and foremost, he loves me totally, deeply,
unconditionally, in a way no human could ever hope to love.  He
doesn't care what I look like, where we live, or what we do every day,
he's just happy to be near me.  He's the most loyal dog that's ever
owned me.  I love him so much, but enough of this stuff, let me tell
you why I feel he is a true hero.

I was carrying a foster dog through our house, when I slipped and
fell on our wet tile floor.  I didn't let the foster hit the ground hard, he
was in my arms, but, he did make a tiny little squeaky noise, and my
Greyhound's prey instinct kicked into overdrive.  She came running
and grabbed me by the ankle, and as all this went on, Bizzy came
running up to me to protect me.  I'm still on the ground trying to
protect the little dogs, and she grabbed Bizzy around the back of the
neck.  Thankfully, we were in front of our bathroom, and I got up on
my hands and knees, and shoved Bizzy backwards into the
bathroom to save him!  She grabbed my supporting arm and mauled
it - I kept the foster from being grabbed, and by then my husband and
my son had made it into the room and got her off me, and we started
checking the dog's for injuries.  My little foster boy was safe,
thankfully - he was partially paralyzed and couldn't have survived a
bite from a large dog.  I got Bizzy out, and he had a bite wound, but
seemed ok, just shook up.   My ankle had the u-shaped bite mark
around it, and my arm had a huge round swelling under it, about the
size of a baseball.  Long story short, my arm had muscle adn nerve
damage, which took 6 months to heal, but my poor Bizzy....he tried to
save me and ended up with a much more serious injury than we first
thought.  He had a disk in his neck so badly damaged that it had his
spinal cord compressed more than 50%..  He had to undergo
surgery to repair that, and ended up suffering from major muscle
contractions as he healed.  They were extremely painful, and he had
to go back to the Neurology Center to be treated for those, as muscle
relaxers didn't even touch them.   He is still not healed seven months
later, and is facing another surgery because of it.   In a very literal
way, Bizzy put himself in harm's way to try to save me.  He's a hero, a
very brave hero in my eyes, and I love him so much.
