Star Spangled Heroes – Share your story and
win!

Fearless acts of bravery. Profound loyalty.
Unconditional love.

Whether it’s going into harms way to protect a loved
one or staying by their side through rough times, dogs
do amazing things. They are extraordinarily unselfish
beings. And sometimes, their acts are nothing less
than heroic.

We created this space to honor those dogs who have
shown their courage and loyalty to others whether that
be humans or fellow animals.  Is your dog a hero?
Send us your story and your dog will become part of
the Star Spangled Heroes Dog Hall of Fame!  Read

ONE MAN'S SPECIAL
TRIBUTE TO A DOG

The one absolutely unselfish
friend that
a man can have in this selfish
world,
the one that never deserts him,
the one that never proves
ungrateful
or treacherous, is his dog.
A man's dog stands by him in
prosperity
and in poverty,
in health and in sickness.
He will sleep on the cold ground
where
the wintry winds blow,
and the snow drives fiercely,
if only he may be near his
master's side.
He will kiss the hand that has no
food to offer, he will lick the sores
and wounds that come in
encounter with
the roughness of the world.
He guards
the sleep of his Pauper master
as if he
were a prince.
When all other friends desert,
he remains.
When riches take wings and
reputation
falls to pieces,
he is as constant in
his love as the sun in it's journey
through the heavens.
If misfortune drives the master
forth
an outcast in the world,
friendless and homeless,
the faithful dog asks
no higher privilege than that of
accompanying him to guard
against danger,
to fight against his enemies.
And when the last scene of all
comes,
and death takes the master in it's
embrace, and his body is laid
away in the cold ground,
no matter if all other
friends pursue their way,
there by the
graveside will the noble dog be
found,
his head between his paws,
his eyes sad,
but open in alert watchfulness,
faithful and true, even in death.

-From a speech given by
Former Senator
George Graham Vest
of Missouri. Delivered in 1870
when he was acting as a lawyer
in a suit against
a man who had killed
the dog of his client.
-- He won the case.
Star Spangled Heroes – Hero Dogs Donations

Hero Dogs Donations

From sniffing out bombs to leading the blind, there are so many ways that
our canine friends demonstrate their bravery and skills. Where would we
be without their courage?

Our monthly drawing winners will have the opportunity to select one of the
following organizations to receive a donation from Star Spangled Pet
Treats. We will donate a $300 gift basket that the organization will then
use to auction off through their fund raising activities. We encourage you to
support and celebrate these organizations that honor heroic dogs. Click
on the name for a link to their website.

United States War Dogs Association, Inc.
www.uswardogs.org

The United States War Dogs Association, Inc. is a nonprofit
organization of former and current U.S. Military Dog Handlers and
supporting members committed to promoting the long history of the
Military Service Dogs, establishing permanent War Dog Memorials
and educating the public about the invaluable service of these
canines to our country.

The organizations objectives are to:

1. Educate the public with the use of our traveling U.S. War dog
exhibit. We celebrate the history of all U. S. Military War Dogs from
all wars through our exhibit.

2. Raise funds to establish a U.S. War Dog Memorial.
3. Create a K-9 CORPS commemorative stamp.  We encourage you
to sign petitions to have the Postal Service issue a commemorative
stamp for all military working dogs.

4. Through our fund raising, we support service dog organizations
such as Military War Dogs, Police Canine units and Search and
Rescue units.

5. Support K-9 adoption. We help find homes for retiring military and
police canines.

The Public Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) was founded in 1976.  We are
a 501(c)3 non-profit organization considered to be one of Ohio’s most
reputable long-standing cat and dog humane rescue groups.

Our group is dedicated to the rescue of pets in Northeastern Ohio. Our
mission is to rescue stray and/or abused cats and dogs and place them
in good homes. It is a PAWS policy to adopt animals to responsible
homes only in the greater Cleveland area.  We are a no kill organization
(the only time we euthanize is on the advice of a vet in order to end
suffering where no hope of recovery exists). Everything we do is out of love
for the animals.

PAWS philosophy is that kindness to animals helps build a better world
for all of us.  Through the generosity of other caring individuals, we can
ensure that animals who come into the care of PAWS will never again be
alone, hungry, sick, afraid, or in pain.

Our mission is ….

  • To provide for the welfare, medical care, temporary housing, and
adoption of dogs and cats in northeast Ohio.

  • To Work for the prevention of cruelty to all animals.

  • To work to form coalitions and working relationships with other
    local and national humane organizations.

  • To actively create, promote and implement a humane education
    program.

  • To reduce the over population of cats and dogs in northeast Ohio
    through education.
